Lee Sungho

Petroleum & Chemical Products Team

1. What is your main role?

I am responsible for polymer sales, development, and tarpaulin sales in the Petrochemical Division, Petrochemical Team 2. My main role is to sell polymer products produced by various refineries and petrochemical companies, as well as customized tarpaulins from a Vietnamese tarpaulin company in which our company has equity investments, to various parts of the world. While we previously focused on direct sales of domestically produced products to overseas markets, we have recently been frequently engaging in triangular trade by sourcing and selling products from various countries such as China, Southeast Asia, and India, in line with the growing global petrochemical industry.

Also, I’m responsible for various sales tasks, ranging from developing clients and sourcing channels, promoting products, ensuring the safety and progress of transactions, managing shipments, credit management, to collections. Recently, I have also been involved in developing new businesses, such as those related to recycled materials.

2. . If there are necessary conditions and competencies to perform the job, what would it be?

I believe that “An active spirit of challenge and responsibility” is the most necessary quality. The traditional roles of supervisors have diminished due to the breakdown of information imbalances between regions and industries, so resting on our laurels will quickly lead to obsolescence. This is especially true in the petrochemical and energy sectors, where significant changes are underway in industries such as renewable energy, secondary batteries, eco-friendly materials, and recycled materials. To actively discover future opportunities in line with these changing trends, a proactive and continuously challenging spirit is needed.

Additionally, if one does not responsibly complete all aspects from sourcing to delivery to the final customer, various overlooked issues can dynamically arise. Therefore, I believe that a sense of responsibility to complete one’s work until the end is essential.

3. What are you proud of about Hyundai Corporation?

First, although it may vary by department, I believe the greatest advantage is the opportunity to be assigned as a person in charge and grow quickly from a junior level. Initially, you may face many challenges, but as you overcome each one, you can quickly accumulate experiences that cannot be gained elsewhere.

Second, you can learn a lot from excellent colleagues, and the network of talented seniors who have worked at the company is very helpful in practical work. The ability to interact with seniors who are demonstrating their abilities in various aspects of the industry, and the sense of belonging to Hyundai Corporation, is an incredible intangible asset.

Lastly, I think a major advantage is the networking through numerous overseas branches and subsidiaries, which offers many opportunities for dispatch. If you search for Hyundai Corporation, you will easily find news about branch managers in their 30s. This shows that, regardless of age or tenure, you can be given opportunities to be dispatched to overseas branches based on your will and ability, which I believe is a significant advantage.

4. What advice would you give to juniors who want to join the company?

It would be good to choose one or two of the businesses our company is engaged in that you are interested in and prepare for the interview with that direction in mind. Naturally, the amount and quality of information you can acquire will differ, so I’m not suggesting you speak at a professional level, but I believe there will be a clear difference between actively demonstrating your genuine interest in the company and not doing so. Especially, rather than blindly highlighting your credentials, I think interviewers will prefer sincere answers.

If you have time, I recommend watching the drama “Misaeng.” Of course, there is a gap between drama and reality. However, I believe you will be able to get a sense of the necessary skills I’ve mentioned above to some extent, and also gain an indirect understanding of the work we do.

I hope that many persistent and capable individuals will join us, so we can work together and grow.
